The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival is a patriotic celebration of the United States of America that has been hosted annually since 1984, with one exception.
Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival
Each year thousands of Eastern Iowa residents and visitors join together to enjoy the many events and activities of the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival beginning in June and culminating with the annual Celebration of Freedom Fireworks on July 4th.
The idea for this celebration was first conceived by Peter Teahen in 1983 while attending a 4th of July Celebration in Fairfax, Iowa. Teahen noticed various Cedar Rapids residents in the crowd and wondered why similar celebrations were not held in larger communities like Cedar Rapids.
In 1984, in collaboration with the Veterans Council and with the help of Cedar Rapids volunteers, Teahen hosted the first Cedar Rapids Fourth of July Celebration of Freedom. This marked the beginning of a cherished tradition that continues to this day.
The tradition of fireworks on the 4th of July in downtown Cedar Rapids began with a presentation to the city council in 1984. On July 4, 1985, the incredible new tradition took flight, lighting up the night sky and captivating residents and visitors alike.
